Artcyclopedia
A comprehensive site that allows you to search for artists or art work. It provides a brief description of the artist and then links to other web sites with images of their work. The focus is on fine art, but you will find some designers here. If you can't find a designer in a name search, try browsing by movement.
World Wide Arts Resources
Another site that allows you to search for web sites about specific artists. This site is not as easy to use as Artcyclopedia.
Mark Harden's Artchive
A good source of images. This is a personal website, with an extensive collection of scanned images. The emphasis is fine art, but work by some designers is also included. Mark Harden also writes reviews for the on-line art magazine Glyphs.

Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec - Poster of Aristide Bruant
A wonderful explanation of one of Toulouse-Lautrec's most famous posters. It includes an animation explaining the printing process of lithography.
Constructivist Books
Part of an essay about the illustrated book by Richard Minsky.
An Introduction to Vintage Poster Art
A good survey of the history of the poster, from Cheret to the present. This is part of the web site of the store, The International Poster Gallery, in Boston MA.
Cuban Posters
Part of an on-line exhibition of Cuban, Russian, and Chinese political posters put up by the International Institute of Social History in Amsterdam. This has a lot of interesting images.
Chicago Public Library
Search the library's collection on-line. You can look for books or magazines and then go to the library. Note that HWLC stands for Harold Washington Library Center, the main downtown branch.
