The Bensenville Campus has hired a new librarian, Josh Sopiarz, who brings a multitude of talents and skills to the students, faculty, and staff. While all librarians have a library science degree, Sopiarz has accomplished even more than that. Having attended Eastern Illinois University, University of Illinois, and St. Louis University, Sopiarz was able to work towards Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in History, and currently toward a PhD in American Studies.
Although at Bensenville only a short time, Sopiarz has helped many students and faculty with their research – and anyone with a quest for knowledge in general. He wants to help students learn and use his skills to their advantage. Sopiarz stated that in order to be a good librarian, one must, “Be ready for problems that may arise academically, have knowledge of the school’s databases and catalogues, and have [excellent] researching skills.”
Sopiarz expressed that he enjoys working with students and helping them succeed. “I encourage students to be in school for more than just A’s, to take full advantage of their resources and learn, and to read as much as possible,” he said. “I look forward to coming every day to work and helping the students.”
Sopiarz became interested in a career as a librarian when he was a research assistant in college. Sopiarz expressed his passion about his work. When asked what his main goal was, he replied, “[Two things]: help students learn and know the information is out there and to empower myself by always learning new things. Librarianship is a great way to do that.”
Sopiarz has a solid work ethic, but he also values time with his wife and daughter, as well as playing his guitar. In the future, Sopiarz’s goals include developing an instructional session on library methods and continuing to teach students to learn how to navigate the databases. With his experience and wonderful attitude towards learning, there is no doubt he will accomplish these goals.
