Intercampus Opinions

Intercampus opinions is a new section in which Eagle writers from the various RMC campuses will respond to the same question.

Should RMC students get more vacation time during the year?

Robert Morris College gives students something unique and that involves working hard to receive your associates and baccalaureate degree in three and a half years. As an RMC student, I do not think that we should have more vacation or time off than we do now. RMC attracts many new students every year. One of the bases of this attraction is because RMC offers students two degrees in three and a half years. However, the work needed to achieve these degrees is year-round. As students, we know that we only have one week off for summer break and, as it is, several days off for spring break. With this situation, the question -- should we get more vacation time – occurs.

RMC offers a great deal of opportunity for those who are dedicated to college and all it has to offer. Yes, we do only have one week off for summer break, as opposed to other colleges that give their students plenty of time off; however, those students do not have the chance to save the money we do and to achieve two degrees in less than four years. We are a given a great opportunity here at RMC and we should make the best of it. If having more vaction time is important, once you have graduated and save money, take some time to travel; it will be more enjoyable with all the things you have accomplished.

Summer beckons, as I glance out from behind the windows at RMC, and it sure looks nice out. As much as I’m looking forward to our entire week off in July, generous when compared to our usual few days off between terms, forgive me for being greedy but I want more. I have a jealousy akin to what a child feels grounded inside on a glorious day, watching peers frolic outside. However, it is a trade-off I willingly signed up for. Vacation may be good for the soul, but an accelerated curriculum, paid for with that vacation, is good for nothing the petulant child in me interrupts, wistfully eyeing her friends.

I do not think RMC Student come to Robert Morris knowing that the college goes at an accelerated pace, and with that, students graduate much earlier than they would at a school that has months off for various breaks throughout the school year. Personally, I would rather finish my degree in less than three years than have extended break in between semesters or quarters.

Is two weeks out of the year really enough to be called “vacation?” I think not. The scant few days that RMC students get off are hardly enough to plan much of anything that typically constitutes a decent break. Spring break in Cancun; forget it. Sure, we get Fridays off and most small holidays (thanks Dr. King), but boy would it be nice to be able to take a trip and get away; or at least have the option to get away.

RMC students often complain that the one-week summer and winter vacations provided to them are not enough time off. Well more time would be nice; however, college is a stepping-stone into the real world. When students graduate and get their first career-oriented job they are only going to get a week or two of vacation time. If they are pampered with a threemonth summer vacation all throughout college, their first couple of years in the work force are going to be a rude awakening. Therefore, the two one-week vacations that RMC provides are adequate for students to recuperate for the upcoming academic challenges.
